Double Decks originated from Pennsylvania, Lousiana, South Dakota, Michigan, California, Ohio, New Mexico, and Kansas. When I arrived at 6:00AM, 48 horses had already arrived night before and only one had a scratched face. Station USDA APHIS inspectors at the horse slaughter plants to find horses and monitor the condition of arriving horses. Horses sold at the New Holland sale were very well. Figure shows a typical pen of slaughter horses.

The horses were observed either in the slaughter plant holding pens or while they were handled in a tagging at the plant. A total 1,008 horses were surveyed.

Both major and injuries occurring in the three different types of trailers were tabulated for the first 500 horses. Due to problems with lack of cooperation by many drivers, it was impossible to get the detailed truck that was in our proposal. All the handling at the unloading chutes was good.
